The coureurs des bois, or the Men of the Wind, had a complex relationship with their new land and its inhabitants. Adventurers in the New World attempts to capture the life and times of these men in an extremely well illustrated volume, placing them in their historical and social context. Although translated (from Les Coureurs des bois: La Saga des Indiens blancs), it doesn’t read like a translation, as Germain’s text has a vigour and lyricism of its own. mRb
