In author-illustrator Mélanie Watt’s latest book (Kids Can Press), Scaredy Squirrel’s fear of real and perceived threats of the unknown keep him cooped up in his nut tree. The phobic tree-rat is prepped with an emergency kit should an unexpected incident arise. The squirrel has a close encounter with one of his fears and, in a panic, leaves the tree. On the descent from his nest, he discovers that he has the gift of flight. This quirky, humourous tale is illustrated with charcoal pencil and acrylic artwork which doesn’t overshadow or clutter the text. mRb
