The title character in Marie-Louise Gay’s Good Night Sam is the younger brother of Stella, who has starred in three previous books. Sam keeps Stella awake when he can’t sleep because he can’t find his dog, Fred. The siblings get out of bed to search the house for Fred, to no avail. A tired Stella calls off the search and suggests they resume it in the morning. When Stella and Sam return to bed, Sam discovers that Fred was there all along. The delicate mood of Gay’s watercolour images mirror the nature of Stella’s gentle interaction with Sam. mRb
